DESCRIPTION: toraro-aoi is a native plant which, when soaked in water, produces a thick mucous which aids in paper-making (by helping the fibers remain dispersed and then keeping them on the mould and by preventing the water from draining too quickly)... Here Iwano-san demonstrates how the liquid from toraro-aoi (soaking in the bowl in the left foreground) is strained several times through a cloth bag in order to remove impurities (like leaves and bugs or whatever) before it is added to the kozo fiber...
