DESCRIPTION: The first Heizaburo Iwano Designated as a Fukui prefectural intangible cultural asset in 1957 Died in 1960 He had been spoken of as a master of making washi since the Meiji period and he rendered distinguished work to the development of the washi industry. Heizaburo mastered the special techniques of making patterns like Uchigumo and Tobigumo which had been inherited from the Heian period and he was designated as a Fukui prefectural intangible cultural asset for his work. He enjoyed friendly relationships with many great masters in the modern Japanese style of paintin: Taikan Yoloyama, Houan Kosugi, and Seihou Takeuchi. He created everlastin gashi or paper for painting like Kumohada Mashi or cloud-colored hemp paper. It is well known that he made five meter-squared washi to the order of Taikan Yokoyama in 1925. This huge paper was for the wall painting entitled Meian or Light and Shade which Taikan painted for Waseda University in Tokyo.
