March 4, 2013 I completed a larger than life drawing over painting of my studio assistant, Madeline Cass, and her friend, Kit Landwehr.
I drew the outlines of the color areas on the heavy drawing paper, then laid mylar over the drawing and hand-cut the color shapes with a sharp blade, being careful not to penetrate the paper too deeply. I mixed pigment suspensions in water to make the bright red, green, and blue colors. The bright green and red underlying Madeline’s dress and both models’ skin was brushed freely through the stencil cut-outs. Then I registered the cut-out figures (to protect the already painted areas) and, with assistance from Madeline Cass and Will Bradley, finger painted the bright blue background.
Then I drew in black and white inks over the color areas. I like the bright colors, the floating models, the lightness of the thing.
