Max

March 26, 2004 By Mike Lyon

Just thought I’d let you know that I have a new carving “assistant”! I tell her exactly what to do and how to do it, and she goes to it! She’s GREAT! Fast, too! Yesterday she carved 24 — yes, you heard me right — TWENTY-FOUR — pretty complex chuban blocks for me and they […]

Self Portrait

January 15, 2004 By Mike Lyon

Another mostly failed attempt to realize a full-color woodcut. The source was a water-color self portrait I painted a few years ago. The reduction print was carved from three blocks in various reductions. A ‘yellow’ block was carved and printed three times, a ‘blue’ block was carved and printed four times, and a ‘red’ block […]

Shunga (spring picture)

December 16, 2003 By Mike Lyon

Pigment is Prussian Blue pigment suspension and sumi, both from Daniel Smith* mixed into a little home-brewed rice paste I cooked up from Lineco, Inc Neutral pH Pure Rice Starch (McClain’s now has some nice Japanese rice starch, too). I jury rigged a primitive sort of double boiler from my hot water pot heating some […]

Aspen (tiny woodcut)

December 8, 2003 By Mike Lyon

This was a ‘rush’ job for Baren Exchange #18 — someone actually had the cajones to drop out over one month AFTER the exchange deadline, and I was the next one on the waiting list. So I said, “give me a week.” and it’s been six days, so 31 of these go in the mail […]

Jessica Prone

November 24, 2003 By Mike Lyon

I used a Spanish Cedar block for this print — you can see the marked grain of the wood (horizontal light colored lines) in the detail below. The overall mottling in the color of the print is from the very textured (and very beautiful!) Inomachi paper.

“Puzzle Print” (after Toyokuni II), Maria Arango coordinated a Baren Forum collaborative print. Maria supplied each printer with a block (one piece of the puzzle) for “What is Baren” (Project details).
